Using Incentive to Generate Innovation

A new contest has been anounced called the Automotive X-prize. The idea here is to get car designers to create a car that can go a 100 miles on a gallon of gasoline. The prize money is 10 milllion. What amazes me is how they are able to create this incentive without a singe dime of tax payer money.

I heard there was one of these for gene sequencing too. I’m pumped. Too bad most of the big dollars for prosthetics come from DARPA, though.

Yeah, I’d totally vote for somone who wanted to use government funding for technological incentives in this highly efficient manner.

Did you read the second sentence? You already have voted to create incentives for prosthetic development. DARPA is the part of the Millitary funding that goes towards developing new technolgies millitary use.

  4. Darwin Says:

Awesome. I hope it works out.

    Let See now…

10 million if you design an automobile that will get 100 mpg? (NEVER done before) what is the commercial value of that?

1 to 2 up to 5 million signing bonus + millions to play a professional sport? (Happens EVERY year). With endorsements 5 to 50 million a year?

I guess Rick Wagner does seem to be overpaid by a considerable amount. Because He and his fellow trustee’s of America’s Automotive industry are so smart that they cooked up this big reward.
