This isn’t exactly new. There are already games like this. For example:

You can either play for free, in which case the game supports itself via ads, or pay five bucks a month to get an ad-free experience (and some in-game bonuses like the ability to purchase higher-end gear).
Other forms of media, such as radio, have been ad-supported for quite some time.
