HOLY CRAP!
I have thought of the greatest idea in the entire universe:
Pixar should either develop a Calvin and Hobbes series using the old cartoons or develop a full motion picture.
Seriously, is that not the greatest idea you have ever heard?

It’s a great idea if Waterson would agree to write it, but he won’t… I’m sure Pixar could make a great script, but I’m not sure they could perfectly capture the feel of teh strip, and that would bug me even if their version was really good. But it is a pretty cool thought.

I love Calvin and Hobbes, but I don’t know if it would translate to a feature length CGI or full motion movie. If history has taught us anything, it’s that cartoons should stay cartoons, and at most be translated to standard (old-fashioned) animation, a la Peanuts. The Garfield movie was supposedly terrible, but the animated cartoons weren’t bad. The Dilbert cartoon was also not terrible (not that great either though).
Ultimately, I have those characters’ images so ingrained in my brain that I don’t think I could accept anything else. I would need regular animation, especially since this particular cartoon was much more about the dialogue than the imagery, and I think a bunch of Pixar fanciness would distract from what made this cartoon great.

Keep in mind, though, that this was the considered opinion about comic books until jus a few years ago, and now comic books movies are often faithful, spirit-capturing, well-crafted tributes to the works they’re based on. So I don’t think it’s neccessarily impossible to translate a cartoon into a good movie, but I agree it’s unlikely at this point, especially for C&H/Pixar.
