In both cases their intelligence (or in Lincoln’s case, wisdom) opens their eyes to the truth behind it all, and upon seeing the truth they are unable to turn away from it, what you might call stubbornness. They simply knew they were right, and history has proven them correct.
Honestly, I wouldn’t even say Darwin was all that stubborn. He was a nerd who pathologically continued to find evidence supporting his theory, but never published a thing for 20 years, due to his religious nature and knowledge that his discovery would deal a major blow to creationism. The only reason he published his work was because he found out someone else was going to publish first. He was not stubborn in his support for his theory; rather, he simply found so much evidence supporting his idea that it was madness to deny it. In his case, I would say intelligence and diligence led to his greatness, not stubbornness.
